He initiated “ Epilepsy Control Programme” in India and conducted 10 workshops with the support of WHO- SEARO, New Delhi.


He had prestigious R O1 project grant from NIH, USA and conducting a Research Project on “Longitudinal Neurological progression of HIV 1 & HIV 2 “


As  Director & Vice Chancellor:


His hard work coupled with passion lead to getting the status  of ‘Institute of National Importance’ for NIMHANS, Bangalore in 2012 by an act of Parliament.


He  has initiated number of new programmes, these include

1) ‘Neurobiology Research Center’(NRC) with 15 ‘state of art’ laboratories;

2) Cognitive Neurosciences center(CNC) with 3T MRI and EEG facility for the first time in the country;

3) Center for Public Health (CPH) for purely Mental Health & Neurological disorders;

 4) NIMHANS Center for well being’ (NCWB) for Preventive & Promotive Mental health;

5) Center for Community mental health &  Mental Health Rehabilitation;

6) Magenetoencephalography (MEG) facility for the first time in the country;

7) Adolescent Psychiatry facility with 24 beds;

8)  Women’s Deaddiction wards in the Center for addiction medicne;

9) Hospital Information system (HIMS), Telemedicine  and Virtual knowledge network (VKN) facility; 

10) Ayush Block with Integrated Yoga center,

11) PET- MRI center with Cyclotron Facility for the first time in the country;

12) Planned for separate 125 beds ‘R.M.Varma center for Subspecialty’ in Neurosciences.

13) NIMHANS Heritage Museum to depict the 150 years history of development of this institution

 14) Separate NIMHANS Northern Campus initiated in a 40 acres land already allotted by Govt. of Karnataka in Bangalore.


Instrumental in starting following new departments at NIMHANS;

a)      Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry for the first time in the country

b)      Department of Neurorehabilitation

c)      Virtual department of Clinical neurosciences


Hasinitiated number of new courses

a)      Dual PhD programme with University of Liverpool U.K. and Maastricht’s , Netherlands;

b)      DM in Child & Adolescent Psychiatryfor the first time in the country;

c)      DM in Neuropathologyfor the first time in the country;

d)      DM in Addiction Medicine; for the first time in the country

e)      DM in Neuroanaesthesia,

f)       Masters in Public health (MPH) with special emphasis in Mental health & Neurological disorders

g)      Post doctoral fellowships (PDF)in various branches of Psychiatry & Neurology, Neuro-rehabilitation; Neurocritical Care and Transfusion medicine

h)      Fellowship in Disaster Management , Psychiatric Rehabilitation,  etc.

Infosys Foundation Dharmashala,  24 x7  hours imaging  facility;  

Free Legal Cell,E-Hospital System, E- Projects

Computerization of all the Hospital and Lab activities, expanding facilities for patients in the OPD and Emergency 


NABL Accreditation for all the four labs at NIMHANS

Number of beds increased from 842 to 934. Which will go up by another 125 beds in neurosciences reaching 1059

Created two hundred and twenty four (224) new positions including 78 faculty posts


Has Initiated Public – Private partnership programmes to promote Research & Training

a)      Conservation of water by rain water harvesting ,

b)      1 million liter sewage treatment plant using recycled water for gardening and flushing in the student hostels;

Awards  & Prizes:


1. Awarded Prestigious Karnataka Rajyothsava Award  by Government of Karnataka in the Field of Medical Science for the year 2014.


2 Awarded prestigious Basanti Devi Amir Chand ICMR Prize for Bio Medical Scientist 2010 (awarded in 2013)


3.Awarded “ Asia Oceanian Outstanding Achievement Award in Epilepsy’ from Commission on Asia Oceanian Affairs , International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) at Melbourne, Australia on 21st October, 2010 for his Out standing contributions to the field of Epilepsy in this region.


4. In recognition of the contribution in the field of medical science, he was awarded prestigious ‘Sir C.V.Raman Young Scientist Award’   by Government of Karnataka in 1997.


5. Awarded  the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi the prestigious  “Amruth  Mody Unichem prize” for Neurology for the year 1998 This was for the outstanding research in Epilepsy.


6. Research Awards : His paper received Hindustan Ciba  Geigy-Gold medal for the best paper in epilepsy in the two consecutive annual conference of NSI in 1991, 1993 and  best research paper awards during Annual conference of Indian Academy of Neurology(IAN)  in 1996, 2006, 2007,2008 and 2012. Also won awards in ‘Epilepsy conference (ECON)’ in 2004 at Lucknow and two awards in 2005 at Jaipur


7. His paper was also selected for ‘Young Investigator Award’ in the International Epilepsy Congress at Oslo, Norway in 1993.


8. Awarded Fellow of Royal of Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) London in 2013


9. Awarded Fellow of Indian Academy of Neurology (FIAN) -  1998

He was a Visiting professor in the Department of Medicine, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry in November 1997 gave JIPMER Scientific society lecture.


He gave prestigious  “George Burden Memorial International Lecturer” at ‘British Epilepsy Conference’ held at Edinburgh, UK in March 2000.
